Industrial floor marking tape is an extra-thick engineering tape made from PVC or PET with a high-tack adhesive coating. It is used to zone floors in factories, warehouses and distribution centres under 5S and ISO practice.
The difference comes down to thickness and adhesive type, which is why it handles wheel abrasion and heavy foot traffic far better than ordinary tape.
What you can use it for
Safety walkways
Separate pedestrian routes from machinery and material handling traffic
Forklift lanes
Takes repeated forklift passes all day without the edges curling up
Hazard zones
Electrical panels, fire extinguishers, risk points and keep-clear areas under 5S
Warehouse layouts
Pallet bays and sorting points that you can re-plan without repainting the floor

How does floor marking tape differ from ordinary adhesive tape ▾
The difference is thickness and adhesive type. Floor marking tape is an extra-thick engineering tape made from PVC or vinyl, designed specifically to take wheel abrasion and foot traffic. Ordinary tape tears and lifts within days once a forklift runs over it.
How should we choose tape colours to meet safety standards ▾
Here is the convention most plants follow. Always defer to the safety layout set by your safety officer.
Yellow / blackAreas with fall hazards or changes in floor level
White / redAreas storing flammable materials
Other coloursAssigned according to your own site layout
Does it leave adhesive residue on epoxy floors ▾
All four industrial grades we recommend use adhesives formulated to lift away cleanly, so they will not damage an epoxy finish. Cheap tape usually leaves adhesive behind that has to be scraped off or dissolved, which risks staining the floor. If your floor has a specialist coating, test a small patch before marking out the whole area.
Can you slit rolls to a custom width ▾
Yes. We slit rolls to whatever width you need. 3M 471 can be cut from 3 mm upwards, and KINGHAWK K621 comes in three standard widths. Just tell us the width you work with, so you are not buying oversized rolls and cutting them down yourself.
How should it be applied to last as long as possible ▾
Surface preparation matters more than the tape itself. The sequence we recommend is:
1 Clean the floor until it is completely dry and free of dust, oil and moisture
2 Press the tape down firmly along its whole length, especially at the ends and joins
3 Allow the adhesive to set before running forklifts over it
4 Avoid laying over cracks or flaking surfaces, as the tape will come away with the floor
Not sure which grade to use. How do we get advice ▾
Send us a photo of the floor along with a note on how the area is used, such as whether forklifts run through it, whether the floor is epoxy or concrete, and whether there is moisture or heat. Our technical team will recommend the right grade and size at no charge.
The information on this page is general guidance on material selection, not a legal requirement. Safety zone layouts, colour coding and control measures at your site should be decided together with your safety officer and must comply with the safety legislation that applies to you. Floor marking is a supplementary visual measure. It does not replace machine guarding, fall protection or other engineering controls.
