When Should Primer Be Applied?
Add just one step before applying tape. It takes only a few minutes, with no changes to your production tools.
Clean the Surface
Remove all oil, dust, and contaminants, then allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.
Apply a Thin Coat of Primer
Use a brush or sponge to apply a thin, even coat. Avoid thick layers or repeated application that causes pooling, as this slows drying and reduces adhesion.
Allow to Dry (Flash-off)
Allow the solvent to evaporate until the surface is dry and no longer tacky to the touch, following the drying time specified in the product's TDS.
Apply Tape or Silicone Sealant
Join the parts after the primer has dried. Press firmly to ensure the adhesive makes full contact with the entire bonding surface.
Match the Formula to the Environment
The same surface may require different formulas in different environments.
For parts exposed to sun and rain throughout their service life, such as building facades, outdoor signage, and automotive exterior components.

What Material Are You Bonding?
For slippery plastics such as PP or PE, general-purpose primers are not effective enough. A formula specifically designed for low surface energy (LSE) surfaces is required. Metals, glass, and ABS offer a wider range of options.
What Conditions Will the Part Face?
Assess whether the part will be exposed to high heat, humidity, or chemicals throughout its actual service life, not just conditions on the production line.
What Requirements Does Your Factory Have?
If pollution controls or ventilation restrictions apply, choose a Water-based or Low VOC formula to meet safety criteria and reduce the load on extraction systems.

What Type of Primer Is 3M Primer 94, and What Is It Used For?
3M Primer 94 is a 3M primer solution (adhesion promoter) used with VHB and 3M adhesive tapes to improve bonding on hard-to-bond surfaces such as PP, PE, ABS, PET/PBT, glass, metal and painted metal, wood, and concrete. It dries in approximately 1–5 minutes at room temperature. It offers the broadest material compatibility, making it the first choice for production lines handling multiple materials.
How Long Should Primer Dry Before Applying Tape?
Typically 1–5 minutes, depending on the temperature and humidity of the work area. In practice, the surface must be completely dry and no longer tacky to the touch.
Can Primer (Sometimes Called “Adhesive Primer”) Replace Adhesive?
No, it cannot. Although often called “adhesive primer,” primer only promotes surface bonding and has no bonding strength of its own. It must always be used with double-sided tape or an industrial adhesive.
