WHY PET / MYLAR
What Is Polyester (PET) Film Tape?
A tape built on a PET film backing coated with silicone or acrylic adhesive, engineered specifically for industrial processes. It holds up under harsh conditions, which makes it the standard choice wherever a part surface has to be protected with precision.
Browse the full range in Mylar Insulation Tape and Electrical & Electronics Tape
01
High heat resistance
Silicone-adhesive grades handle roughly 180–200°C depending on the product
02
Chemical & solvent resistance
Does not soften or disintegrate on solvent contact
03
Clean removal
No adhesive transfer (residue-free)
What Problems Does PET Tape Solve?
On jobs involving chemicals, coating sprays or high-temperature curing, ordinary paper or PVC tape simply cannot cope — here is the comparison, problem by problem
✕ Ordinary paper / PVC tape
✕ The backing breaks down on contact with solvents
✕ Adhesive bleeds and stays stuck to the part under high heat
✕ Reacts chemically and leaves staining on the surface
✓ Polyester film tape (PET / Mylar)
✓ Solvent resistant — the backing stays intact
✓ No adhesive bleed within the range stated in the TDS
✓ Chemically inert — removes clean without staining
Engineering properties
Keep Part Quality Consistent at Every Stage
Sub-standard tape can scrap an entire lot. PET film tape is engineered to control exactly those risks from the very start of the process.
01
ZERO DEFECT & NO REWORK
Removes clean, leaves no residue, cuts rework
Silicone-adhesive grades handle heat well and leave no adhesive on the part when peeled, removing a cleaning step and the rework that follows it
02
DIMENSION STABILITY
Holds its shape — no shrinking or melting under heat
PET film is highly dimensionally stable with good tensile strength; it will not shrink or turn brittle within the temperature range each grade states in its TDS
03
TDS · UL · ROHS
Documentation you can verify before you commit
Every grade ships with a Technical Data Sheet — 3M 1350F, for example, states a 130°C thermal class and UL 510 Flame Retardant — ready to attach to your spec approval
Two things to verify before any live electrical application
The figures on this page are reference values taken from manufacturer documentation; always confirm them against the latest TDS and the standards your drawing calls for before use · Insulating tape is never the sole means of electrical protection — high-voltage work must be designed by the electrical engineer responsible for it. If you are unsure, talk to our team before ordering
Added service
Cut to the size you actually use (Slit / Die-cut)
We run our own slitting, die-cutting and laminating machines, cutting to the width and shape your line runs — less excess material and less waste from buying oversized

In the field
Which Applications Is It Right For?
From PCB assembly and surface coating through to metal plating and electrical insulation — the applications our factory customers reorder for most often
Electronics & PCB assembly
Masks selected areas of a circuit board, shielding against heat and solder during wave soldering while preventing short circuits
Wave Soldering Short-circuit protection
Painting & surface coating
Masks specific areas in automotive refinishing and powder coating, holding through the curing oven without lifting or leaving residue
Powder Coating Automotive refinishing
Appliances & insulation work
Used for coil and motor winding and as insulation in transformers — good heat resistance and dielectric performance
Coil / motor winding Transformer insulation
Metal plating & chemical contact
Protects parts through plating processes (anodizing / electroplating) where they meet acids or alkalis directly
Anodizing Electroplating
HOW-TO GUIDE
How to Choose the Right PET Tape
Getting the spec right the first time saves an enormous amount in damage costs — check these three things before you order
1
MAX TEMPERATURE
Check the peak temperature of your process
For sustained high heat, choose a silicone adhesive such as MT PET60, rated -40°C to 180°C in its TDS
2
INSULATION VS MASKING
Check what the tape is actually for
For insulation and coil winding without extreme heat, an acrylic adhesive such as 3M 1350F-1 — 130°C class with UL listing — is the better fit
3
SIZE & THICKNESS
Check the width and thickness
Pick a width that matches the area you need to mask. If no stock size fits, we can slit it to size
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How does PET tape differ from polyimide (Kapton) tape? +
The difference is the film backing and the temperature range. PET tape covers medium-to-high heat applications at a far better price, while polyimide is built for hotter work such as sustained reflow temperatures. If your process sits within what PET can handle, PET is considerably more economical.
Which grade should I use for UL certification work? +
3M 1350F-1 appears in several UL Insulated Systems and carries UL 510 Flame Retardant approval. The datasheet is downloadable from the product page to attach to your submission. Always confirm against your drawing requirements and the latest TDS before use.
Why does PET tape come in so many colours? +
Most factories use colour for visual control — green for routine masking points, red for the ones that must not be missed, blue for electronics work and clear where the operator needs to see the part underneath. It measurably reduces line errors without changing the tape specification at all.
My width isn't stocked — can you cut it, and is the MOQ high? +
Yes. We run our own slitting, die-cutting and laminating machines and cut to the width and shape you actually use, from R&D trials through to production volumes. Full details on the
die-cutting / rewinding / laminating page.
Can I get samples to trial on our line before committing? +
Yes. Send us your process spec or a photo of the application and our team will work through temperature, substrate and the right grade with you, then send samples to trial under real production conditions before you decide.
